OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – April 28, 2014 – Approximately 90 customers served by Kansas Gas Service in Baxter Springs, Kansas, were affected by yesterday’s tornado.
Meters at impacted residences and buildings have been shut off as a safety precaution, said Dennis Okenfuss, Kansas Gas Service vice president of operations.
“Safety is the number one priority at Kansas Gas Service, and we’re committed to keeping customers in Baxter Springs safe,” said Okenfuss. “Service technicians have surveyed damaged areas to ensure that all lines are secure from natural gas leaks.”
Residents are reminded of the following safety tips:
Never attempt to turn on your natural gas meter. Only a qualified Kansas Gas Service technician can restore service.
Prior to beginning any excavation in the affected areas, call 811 at least two full working days in advance to allow all utility line locations to be marked.
If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately and call 1-888-482-4950 or 911.
